Rules of the Supra

Being a tamada is not just beautiful words — it is knowing the rules the table keeps with respect. Here is what the supra expects of a true tamada:

  1. 1. The tamada rules the table

Every toast begins with the tamada — the others continue it with alaverdi. Interrupting the tamada, raising a toast without him, or drinking “on your own” breaks the law of the supra.

  2. 2. The order is sacred

God, peace, the reason for gathering, the departed, the parents... The sequence is not random — generations shaped it, and a tamada must know it by heart. That is exactly why this app exists.

  3. 3. A toast is said with wine

No toast is ever said with beer — that is an old rule. Whoever cannot drink wine may follow the supra with water or juice; no one will hold it against them.

  4. 4. The memorial toast — standing, no clinking

To honor the departed, the men rise to their feet, glasses are not clinked, and the glass is drained. In some regions a drop of wine is given to the earth — may it lie light upon them.
